Introducing Murray Harrison

My Story

I have a foot in the past and in the near present. My wooden parts, hinges and key were recovered from a chestnut door on an old ruined Galician stone farmhouse. I have felt many seasons and seen many people pass my way but eventually weather and the years wore me down. As for my metal frame – well I take no pride in telling you I was formerly a piece of scaffold staging. Life was not easy for me though and after seeing service at the hands of some pretty rough characters I was eventually abandoned and left to rust in the long grass. My patina has been refreshed with teak oil and metal varnish.

About Murray Harrison

Murray Harrison is a British creative artisan based in rural Galicia, a rugged verdant region of Northern Spain. Growing up in the Western Isles of Scotland he has a love of land and sea and their contrasting elements. Uninhibited in format or style he has an eye for coupling used and antique materials into decorative or functional pieces, preserving the passage of time and allowing a second life.

This robust wall mounted box is crafted from weathered sweet chestnut and steel. Who isn’t curious about ancient keys and cupboards, what they’ve kept hidden? With the assemblages of Joseph Cornell in mind, I’ve teamed the box in these photographs with a vintage rosary from Lourdes and a little handmade star from my friend Phil Bradley.
